Cash for appliances: Last chance for rebates in two big states

MONEY4 Cash for appliance programs in California and New York are coming to a close. In California, mail-in rebates on refrigerators, washers, dishwashers, freezers and room air conditioners must be postmarked by midnight tonight. And in New York, consumers seeking rebates on refrigerators, washing machines, and freezers are now being moved to a waiting list.

“Closing the appliance rebate program after Black Friday allowed consumers to take advantage of the additional savings from retailers during one of the biggest shopping weekends,” said Amy Morgan, a spokeswoman for the California Energy Commission. She added that the state is reserving the remaining $4.5 million for rebates of $300 to $750 on efficient water heaters and $500 to $1,000 on HVAC systems. Applications for those rebates must be postmarked by Dec. 31—the same day a 30 percent federal tax credit on many of the same models also expires.

In New York, $16.6 million in rebates has already been reserved. Consumers seeking rebates of $50 to $105 on refrigerators, washing machines, and freezers, are being put on a waiting list. “We still have about $4 million in applications to be processed, if any of those applications turn out to be ineligible, the funds will go back into the pot and then made available to people on the waiting list on a first-come, first-serve basis,” said Dayle E. Zatlin, a spokeswoman for the New York State Energy Research and Development Agency. In other cash for appliances news:

North Dakota
After 1,100 reserved rebates went unclaimed, the state restarted its program, which is limited to $150 rebates on refrigerators. The state has also expanded its list of eligible refrigerators from 50 to 90.

Arkansas
The state had over $1 million available last month, but is now down to $161,000 for rebates on washing machines ($225), refrigerators ($275) and water heaters ($300).

Tennessee
The state has $3.65 million left for rebates ranging from $40 to $250 for gas furnaces, air-source heat pumps, and room and central air conditioners.
